Real Clear Idea

"Know Thyself"

The Savage Indian

The recent incident of denial of entry to a person wearing “dhoti” by a mall in a metropolitan city has raised debate in the society about the old age question of rural-urban divide.

Normally “Rural-Urban divide” is seen in context of economic status like possession of assets and income inequality. However this divide is multidimensional. However it can manifest in the form of division in civic etiquette like dressing sense, eating habits, language, makeup, language and communication and so on.

This brings to fore the question that whether there is need to focus on other dimensions of inequality in the society apart from economic inequality i.e. inequality in civic etiquette.

Being urban in current time is equated to being modern and civilized in outlook. on the other hand the Rural is equated with being uncivilized, uncultured and a feeble poor who cant even afford one full meal and is dependent on the tax payers money for living.

“If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.”

Everyone of us want our journey to the destination to be comfortable. However, when the journey is long and tedious and when the path is full of thorns  (no red roses to be found as we might had imagined when we started our journey), we start to believe that the path we have chosen is wrong and so we decide to switch to other path hoping it will have those roses that we had imagined. Therefore, we leave the path and start afresh on new one.

But as we start walking on the new path, we start facing hurdles again. Hence, we again are filled with the similar doubts and confusions as earlier- “Is this the right path?” or “Is there any other path which is easier to traverse?”. Finally, we give-up to our self-doubts and again decide to shift our course to a new one hoping it will be better than the last one.

Thus, we keep on switching from one path to another looking for the ideal one. We either never reach our destination or arrive there very late. So where is the fault?

There may be many paths to the same destination, so what matters is the choice of path and the self-belief and conviction in our abilities.

We should choose path wisely and with full knowledge of obstacles that we may face. It is obvious that we will need to make adjustments according to situations that come but this doesn’t mean we change the path itself. We need to cross these hurdles through our optimistic attitude coupled with better aptitude and capability and with others help. Thus, we must keep faith in ourselves and keep moving towards our goal.

Here I would like to recall the very famous quote by Martin Luther King Jr

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

In the end, what is important is to realize is that obstacles will be present in every path we choose but they should not make us feel demoralized or frightened. We must have courage and ability to face every hurdle that may come in our lives. Success surely comes to those who persist even in the harshest of conditions, have self-confidence, patience, will-power, resilience and vigor.

It will be apt to mention a famous quote by APJ Abdul Kalam –

“All birds find shelter during a rain. But Eagle avoids rain by flying above the Clouds. Problems are common, but attitude makes the difference.”

Lets pray to the almighty to endow us with strength we need.

Rules doesn’t make us Human, but Compassion, Love and Emotions do.

“Rules doesn’t make us Human, Compassion, Love and Emotions do.”
